Ente Photos
vs Google Photos

Ente Photos and Google Photos both back up, search, organize and share your photos, and both can recognize faces.

The key difference is privacy. Ente encrypts your library end to end, so Ente can't see your photos. Google Photos isn't end-to-end encrypted, and Google holds the keys to your library.

Move from Google Photos to Ente

Import your library with Google Takeout and the Ente desktop app.

Ente reads Takeout’s metadata files to restore dates and albums. Keep those files beside the photos they belong to.

Follow the Google Photos guide

Questions about switching? Email the Ente team.

  1. 1

    Export with Google Takeout

Select Google Photos and download the ZIP archives. Extract all of them into one parent folder, keeping the nested folders intact.

  2. 2

    Import into Ente

In the desktop app, choose Upload → Google Takeout and select that parent folder. Choose Separate albums to keep the folder structure. Let the backup finish, then check your albums and dates.

  3. 3

    Save your recovery key

Keep it somewhere safe. Ente can’t recover your library if you lose every way to unlock it.

    Recovery options

Try Ente alongside Google Photos. Exporting does not delete your Google library. Check important photos, videos and dates before deleting anything. Takeout cannot restore quality already lost to Storage saver.

Questions before you switch?

Can Ente replace Google Photos?

Ente can be your main app for backup, search, albums and sharing on iPhone, Android and your computer. Google’s AI editing tools do not carry over. You can keep both apps while you try Ente and move your library.

Does Ente compress my photos?

No. Ente backs up photos and videos in their original quality, without compression. Live Photos keep both the photo and video. Original-quality backup

Google Photos also offers Original quality. Its optional Storage saver setting compresses photos and videos to use less cloud storage.

Will my albums and dates carry over?

Ente’s Takeout importer reads the accompanying metadata files for dates and favorites. Extract every ZIP into one parent folder and keep its subfolders intact, then choose Separate albums during import. Metadata matching can fail if files are separated, so check important dates and albums before deleting your Google library. Takeout import guide

Is Google Photos end-to-end encrypted?

No. Google Photos encrypts data in transit and at rest, but Google holds the keys and can process your cloud library. Ente encrypts your photos before upload, so Ente cannot see them. Keep your recovery key safe; Ente cannot unlock your library for you. How Ente encryption works

Does Google use my photos for ads or AI?

Google says it does not sell your photos or use them for advertising. Optional Ask Photos analyzes your library with Gemini. Queries may be reviewed to improve Photos unless you opt out; those query reviews exclude your photos and responses. Google says these Photos features do not use your personal Photos data to train generative AI outside Photos. Connecting Photos to other Google services has different policies, including possible training on summaries and inferences. Ente’s face recognition and Magic Search run on your device. Google’s Ask Photos privacy policy

Can I share photos with people who don’t use Ente?

Yes. Share an encrypted album link that opens in a browser. You can let guests upload photos, leave comments and add likes without an Ente account. Anyone with the link can view the album unless you add a password or another restriction. Guest uploads use your storage. Album link options

Can I use Ente Photos on multiple devices?

Yes. Use the same library on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows, Linux and the web. Ente desktop apps can watch your photo folders and keep an export up to date. Google Photos also works across phones and browsers; automatic computer-folder backup needs a Chromium browser with the tab or web app open.

Does Ente work offline?

You can view photos whose originals are on your device or cached by Ente. Cloud-only photos need internet to load in full quality. Magic Search and face recognition work offline on mobile and desktop after the initial download and photo analysis. Search setup

What happens to my photos if I stop using Ente?

You can export your library as ordinary photo and video files with the desktop app. If a paid subscription expires, new uploads stop and you have 30 days to renew or export before your stored data is deleted. To return to the free plan, contact support during those 30 days. Subscription policy
