Ente Photos
vs Apple Photos
Ente Photos and Apple Photos both back up, search, organize, share and edit your photos.
The key difference is privacy by default. Ente encrypts your library end to end from the start, while iCloud Photos does this only if you turn on Advanced Data Protection, where available. Ente also works on Android, Windows and Linux, while Apple Photos is built around Apple devices.

How Ente compares with Apple Photos
Apple’s cloud features refer to iCloud Photos.
| Feature | ||
|---|---|---|
| Privacy & trust | ||
| End-to-end encrypted backup | Available: Always on | Conditions or a different workflow: With Advanced Data ProtectionAvailability varies by region. Apple cloud encryption Standard iCloud Photos is encrypted with keys Apple holds. Advanced Data Protection makes your private library end-to-end encrypted. It requires compatible devices and recovery setup; new UK users cannot enable it. Apple can still read some metadata and the data you approve for a browser session. |
| End-to-end encrypted album links | Available: Always on Ente album links Ente cannot read photos shared through an album link. Anyone with the link can view the album unless you add an access restriction. You can set a password or choose when the link expires. | Not available: Not end-to-end encrypted Apple album links Shared Albums and sharing with anyone who has a link use standard protection, even with Advanced Data Protection on. Shared Photo Library is a different feature: it is end-to-end encrypted only when every participant has Advanced Data Protection on. |
| Open source | Available: Apps and service | Not available: Closed source |
| Independent security review | Available: Published code audits Ente security reviews The 2023 review covered encryption and Photos web and mobile apps. These reviews cover service controls; they do not establish a public Photos app code audit. |

Choose “Delete from device” or “Free up space” in Ente. | Not available: Deletion syncs to iCloud Apple photo deletion With iCloud Photos on, deleting in Apple Photos removes the photo from iCloud and your synced devices. Optimize Storage frees local space while keeping the photo in the library. |
| Free phone space | Available: Clear backed-up copies | Available: Optimize Storage Apple storage optimization Optimize Storage keeps originals in iCloud and smaller copies on the phone as space is needed. This is a backup from your folders to Ente, not a way to edit local files from the cloud. | Conditions or a different workflow: Import or iCloud folder Apple folder imports On Mac, import files into the Photos library. On Windows, add photos to the iCloud Photos folder to upload them. Ente can watch your chosen folders without moving the originals. |

Windows can automatically download and keep originals in the iCloud Photos folder. Back up local copies separately to keep older versions. |

Questions before you switch?
Can Ente replace Apple Photos?
Ente can be your main app for backup, search and sharing. On iPhone, Apple Photos remains the system gallery; the camera still saves there first. You can use both. Ente also works on Android, Mac, Windows, Linux and the web.
Does Ente compress my photos?
No. Ente backs up photos and videos in their original quality, without compression. Live Photos keep both the photo and video. Original-quality backup
iCloud Photos also stores full-resolution originals. Optimize Storage saves space on your device while keeping the originals in iCloud.
Is iCloud Photos end-to-end encrypted?
Your private iCloud Photos library is end-to-end encrypted when you turn on Advanced Data Protection, where available. With standard protection, Apple holds the keys. Shared Albums use standard protection even with Advanced Data Protection on. Ente encrypts your photo library and album links by default. Apple’s encryption guidance
Does Ente work offline?
You can view photos whose originals are on your device or cached by Ente. Cloud-only photos need internet to load in full quality. Magic Search and face recognition work offline on mobile and desktop after the initial download and photo analysis. Search setup
What happens to my photos if I stop using Ente?
You can export your library as ordinary photo and video files with the desktop app. If a paid subscription expires, new uploads stop and you have 30 days to renew or export before your stored data is deleted. To return to the free plan, contact support during those 30 days. Subscription policy
